Store Away those Winter Items!

Right now, the snow is falling in Ohio, and spring seems kind of far away, but the reality is it is actually less than a month away! It's time to start thinking about spring cleaning! Getting your house out of “winter mode” can be very invigorating. In fact, storing away those seasonal items will free up space in your house and allow you to live more clutter free! This post is not about how to wash windows and air out your mattresses, but you’ll feel so much lighter when we’re done because you’ll have space in your house! So let’s dive right in!

clear storage tote
Clear totes allow you to see the clothes you put inside!
First, go through your closets and dressers and remove winter clothes. It’s handy to keep a sweater or two around in case the weather gets a little nippy, but when you’re in the sweltering heat of July, having your Christmas sweater taking up space. Bulky items like sweaters, sweatpants, fleece jackets and pullovers and such can be easily stored in a plastic storage tote. Having a clear one will allow you to see what’s inside, in case you want to access something later. To keep those clothing items fresh, have some dryer sheets available and tuck a few inside the tote.

Second, head to your coat closet with another tote and find all those hats and gloves and scarves and toss them in. Keep sets together by tucking the gloves inside each other, then tucking them inside the hat and tying the scarf around it! When winter comes around again, you’ll be happy to find everything has its match! For families, it’s a great idea to have separate small totes for each family member. Use tape and a permanent marker to make a quick label or make cute ones on a printer!

Third, take care of those shoes and boots! You do not want those winter boots hanging around somewhere, under your bed or in your closet, taking up space where your cute summer sandals should be! So grab those tall boots, get some pool noodles and cut them in half, or even thirds, tuck a piece inside each boot to help hold its shape. Take a picture of each pair you will be putting away. Lay the boots neatly inside a plastic tote. Then print off the pictures of the shoes and either laminate or put the paper in a sheet cover and tape it to the tote, so you can see what pairs are inside every tote!

Saving School Papers Without Getting Overwhelmed

From the moment a baby is born (and many time even before!), we start collecting momentos of their lives. Ultrasound pictures, that first lock of hair from a haircut, the blanket they were swaddled in when they first arrived; all of these evoke strong memories and are pleasant to view. A little cedar chest and a baby book is wonderful way to safely store these. When school starts, suddenly, the amount of momentos increases. There are adorable pictures scrawled by tiny hands, those adorable hand print turkeys that everyone makes around Thanksgiving, and you cannot forget about those "letters to mom." But these are mostly paper and other crafting materials. Speaking from experience, the sheer volume of artwork from the first 3 years of school is phenomenal and overwhelming. But that being said, the sentimentalist wants to keep some things, and it's good to do that, but not EVERYTHING. How can you do that while still showing your child that you care about the work they do? H...

Organizing Your Kids' Toys

Any parent knows this struggle. Well-meaning and generous grandparents and relatives lavish gifts upon your beloved children. These children, surrounded by plenty, ignore most of the toys. The ones that are played with are left out, making your house look cluttered, or worse, to be stepped on by an unsuspecting foot in the middle of the night. You could do the normal thing of just shoving them into a toy box following the old adage: "Out of sight, out of mind." The problem with that is that your kids won't be able to find pieces and parts of things and then toys will get neglected, devaluing the generosity of those who gave the toy to them. How do you take control of this chaos? The easy answer? Organization. The tough part? Actually doing it. So let's get started! 1. (This will be painful😂) Get all of the toys out of whatever containers, boxes, nooks and crannies they are hiding in, and put them in a central location. Have room to spread out. 2. Find the tra...

Organizing Your Pantry

When organizing your kitchen many people likely don't think about using storage totes to create a pantry storage system, but it can be a great way to declutter your cooking space and find exactly what you need in your pantry quickly. Whether you have to buy more storage bins or you have some extras around the house, organizing your pantry is easy with some shelves, bins and, of course, all of your kitchen utensils and snacks!  First, you'll have to place the shelving racks in place with screws. This will be the base for your storage options and will help create extra space for things that don't fit in your plastic drawers. After screwing in the shelf holders you can use either pieces that came with the holders or make your own shelves out of wood to create the exact style and look you're going for in your pantry.  Next, you'll have to move onto the storage bin sections. There are options in this step, depending on what type of storage you want. One approach is to ...
